Overview of Reported Data

This is all the available data that has been reported by data center operators in the Netherlands to the Dutch authorities (RVO), a requirement under the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EU/2023/1791) and the national implementation thereof.

Data Center Buildings in the Netherlands
160
Our estimate for total number of data center buildings in the Netherlands with a installed power capacity of more than 500 kW.
Data Center Buildings Reported to RVO
...
Total number of buildings reported to the Dutch authorities (RVO) by data center operators, a requirement stipulated in Article 5.16b. Besluit activiteiten leefomgeving
Data Center Buildings that Reported their Energy Consumption
...
Number of data center buildings for which a report was submitted to the Dutch authorities (RVO) by their operator and which include information on their electricity consumption (as required under Article 5.16b.sub 2 (f) Besluit activiteiten leefomgeving).
Seperate Legal Entities Reporting
...
The number of individual legal entities that operate data center buildings and reported data to RVO.

Overview of Energy use and Emissions

We provide more detailed breakdowns further down, these are the key highlights.

Reported Electricity Consumption
...
Total annual electricity consumption of data center buildings in the Netherlands according to data reported to the Dutch authorities (RVO). This number does not represent the total electricity consumption of data centers in the Netherlands because some operators did not share electricity use data and some operators appear not to have reported to RVO at all.
Calculated Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Electricity Consumption
...
Greenhouse gas emissions related to electricity consumption of the data center buildings calculated by Leitmotiv based on the average annual greenhouse gas intensity of Dutch electricity generation. This does not take into account guarantees of origin (certificates) and power purchase agreements (PPAs), but does consider on-site renewable power generation (e.g., solar panels on the roof).
256 gCO₂e/kWh (European Environmental Agency, Data for The Netherlands from 2023). You can change this value under 'Configure assumptions'
Calculated Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions
...
Total greenhouse gas emissions of data centers calculated by Leitmotiv. This includes calculated emissions from diesel fuel used in backup generators, greenhouse gas emissions related to server manufacturing (based on the number of reported servers) and emissions from grid electricity consumption (not taking into account certificates and PPAs).

Energy from Backup Power Generators

This section relates to the fuel use, energy production and emissions from backup generators of the data center buildings.

Reported Total Power Generated by Backup Generators
